Aim: This course provides learners with knowledge of manual payroll systems & procedures. It aims to equip the learner with the skills to set up and implement a computerised payroll system.

Manual Payroll

Overview of PAYE to include, tax credits, SRCOP and basic calculations

  • Cumulative basis of PAYE
  • Week 1/Temporary Week 1 basis of PAYE
  • Emergency basis of PAYE
  • Starters/Leavers mid year
  • Introduction of USC deductions
  • PRSI
  • Applying deductions to Benefits in Kind
  • Payroll calculations incorporating pension deductions
  • Calculations for employees in receipt of disability/occupational injury and maternity benefits
  • Revenue forms & Year- end Returns

Computerised Payroll

  • Create a Company & set up company details
  • Set up employees details & variables such as rates of pay, pay methods , frequency,  and pay path details.
  • Set up and process  additions, deductions, pensions & BIK’S
  • Set up and process non statutory deductions e.g. cycle to work scheme
  • Edit /change employee details
  • Process weekly & monthly payroll
  • Correct errors generated in previous pay periods
  • Process disability/occupational injury & maternity benefits
  • Issue P45’s
  • Prepare & analyse reports
  • Filing returns with ROS
  • Year end procedures & reporting

Employment Legislation

  • Understand the main provisions of the Organisation of Working Time Act 1997 and the impact on processing payroll
  • Understand the main provisions of the Minimum Notice and Terms of Employment Acts 1973–2005 and the impact on processing payroll
  • Understand the main provisions of the Payment of Wages Act 1991 and the impact on processing payroll.
  • Understand the main provisions of the Terms of Employment Act 1994 and the impact on processing payroll.
  • Understand a Revenue Audit

In order to obtain certification it is necessary to undertake a computerised assessment on Day 5 / Evening 10 of the course. The duration of this is 2 hours and will assess the computerised component of the course.

A manual assessment will be undertaken as a project/case study which can be completed at home and must be submitted at the end of the course.

Upon successful completion of this course learners will be awarded QQI Certificate Level 6, component module 6N4005
